Location scouting is a critical process in the pre-production stage of any filmmaking. While on-site visits cannot be replaced, aero3Dpro can provide a range of simulation tools and relevant location-based information to the producer, cut on-site cost and time and make the location manager’s job easier. This solution would be ideal to support the production of big budget movies and commercials.
How it works?
We generate a photorealistic and geographically accurate 3D model of a specific area using aerial photogrammetry. The acquisition of photographs is done using a helicopter platform. Depending on the accuracy needed, some ground control points are collected on-site to guarantee the accuracy of the model. The resulting 3D model is then created and integrated into aeroviewer, a user-friendly and interactive 3D viewer.

What are the benefits of using aero3dpro for location scouting?
- Assets management: Accurate measurements and location tagging can be performed to determine strategic locations and clearance of assets such as cameras, temporary tents, buildings, caravans, vehicle access, parking areas, doorways, etc. It can then be used as a communication tool between different parties or to extract accurate maps.
- Solar simulation: Based on real solar data, shadows created by objects can be accurately simulated to determine the most suitable date and time for a specific shoot as well as location of cameras.
- Camera view simulation: Using virtual cameras, it is possible to get a simulated view from any location in the 3D model, from the top of a building to a specific apartment window or even simulate a crane camera. This can be done without going directly on-site and give valuable information to the producers/directors.
- Internal and external communication: Using photo tagging and 3D interactive navigation, you can communicate the results of your investigations in an intuitive and efficient way.
Additionally, the 3D model can be used for Visual Effects work further down the path for reference work if needed.
